Why this town works for two people

Three things, and they’re all geography.

It’s small and flat. The whole Historic District is walkable in an evening. Leave the car parked Friday night to Sunday morning and you’ll never want it, which removes the least romantic activity in coastal New Jersey — arguing about parking.

It faces the right way. Cape May sits at the southern tip of the peninsula with water on three sides, so you can watch the sun rise over the Atlantic and set over Delaware Bay on the same day, twenty minutes apart by car.

It empties. Between Columbus Day and Memorial Day, a town of Victorian inns built for 19th-century summer crowds holds a fraction of the people it was built for.

The off-season argument

November through March is cold, quiet and cheap, and every one of those is in your favour.

The numbers. November averages a high around 56°F, December about 48°F. Coat weather, not misery — and the ocean is still near 52°F in November, warmer than the air on plenty of mornings, which is why the beach steams at dawn.

Meters are switched off entirely from January 1 to March 31. In season they run 10am to 10pm at $1.50 an hour. Off-season you park outside dinner and walk away.

The dining rooms are reachable. A July Saturday at the town’s best tables wants booking well ahead. A Friday in February usually doesn’t. Same kitchen, a third of the noise.

Christmas is Cape May’s second season. The programme runs November 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and the town commits — a Victorian resort in full decoration, with the free shuttle running Fridays to Sundays, 4pm to 10pm, from November 26 to December 26.

The catch: winter closes things. Some restaurants and inns shut for weeks, whale-watch season runs March to December, and the Harriet Tubman Museum closes for all of January. Call ahead for everything between January and March.

Where to stay as a couple

Simpler than the listings make it look. Pick your tolerance for shared breakfast.

If you want the full Victorian thing — porches, parlours, a host who knows the house’s history — the B&Bs cluster on Columbia Avenue, Ocean Street and Stockton Avenue: Angel of the Sea at 5 Trenton Avenue, The Queen Victoria® at 102 Ocean Street, The Mainstay Inn at 635 Columbia Street, plus The Mason Cottage, The Bacchus Inn, The Dormer House and Beauclaire’s.

If you’d rather not talk to anyone at breakfast — a legitimate position — Congress Hall at 200 Congress Place, The Virginia Hotel at 25 Jackson Street, The Chalfonte Hotel at 301 Howard Street and Lokal Hotel at 5 Stockton Place give you privacy with the same architecture outside the window.

If you want to be out of town, Beach Plum Farm Cottages at 140 Stevens Street and Wilbraham Mansion at 133 Myrtle Avenue, both West Cape May, sit a short drive from the noise. Parking there is free.

One correction worth repeating: the Luther Ogden Inn is not closed. It’s in its 29th year.

Sunset, and the ceremony nobody tells you about

Cape May’s best free thing happens at 502 Sunset Boulevard, Lower Township, at 7:00pm — always 7:00pm, regardless of when the sun sets.

The flag-lowering ceremony has run for more than fifty years. Each evening honours one American veteran, and the flags flown are veterans’ casket flags donated by their families. It takes a few minutes, people go quiet, and it’s far more affecting than a free beachfront event has any business being.

The 2026 schedule: Saturday only on Memorial Day weekend · Saturdays through June · Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in July and August · final ceremony on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

Stay after. The crowd thins in ten minutes, the SS Atlantus — the concrete ship, and yes it’s SS, not USS — sits offshore going grey, and the beach is free, unguarded and open. Bring something warm; the bay side cools fast once the sun’s down.

Dinner: our picks, and how we'd order the week

A note first: we don’t publish hours or prices for these rooms. They change by season, several by month. Every one needs a phone call or an online reservation, and in July or on a holiday weekend it needs one well in advance.

Our pick for a proper occasion is the Washington Inn — the room most locals name when somebody says anniversary, and the one we’d book if dinner is the point.

Our pick for a quieter, more modern dinner is The Ebbitt Room: smaller, more composed, less an event than an evening.

Our pick for a first night is the Union Park Dining Room, because it doesn’t require you to have already decided the weekend is significant.

Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant, 1301 Beach Avenue, is the ocean-view option and now under new ownership — Carl and Megan Messick, 2026. New ownership usually means a menu in motion, so treat the recommendation as provisional and check before you build the night around it.

410 Bank Street is for people bored of Continental. Hemingway’s Prime Steaks & Seafood is the answer when one of you wants a steak and the negotiation has gone on long enough.

Two notes. Several dining rooms here are BYOB, which changes the bill and the planning — the restaurant guide sorts out which. And Vintage, in the Carriage House at the Physick Estate, is worth knowing for lunch.

Wine, spirits and a patio that lets the dog stay

Willow Creek Winery & Farm, 168 Stevens Street in West Cape May, is the one to book: the only Napa-style winery on Cape Island, the closest to town by a distance, open Monday to Thursday 12–9pm and Friday to Sunday 11:30am–9pm.

Two numbers decide your evening. Last seating is 7:30pm, even though the doors stay open until nine — turn up at 8:15 and you’ve made a mistake. And reservations are strongly encouraged, which in July and August you should read as required.

The patio is pet friendly, which makes Willow Creek the obvious plan for couples travelling with a dog in the off-season, when dogs are allowed on the city beaches anyway from November to March.

For something later, Nauti Spirits Distillery, 916 Shunpike Road, runs a tasting room and cocktail programme on a working farm distillery.

The other six wineries on the Cape May Wine Trail — seven, not the four most lists give you — are on the wineries page. None are walkable from Beach Avenue, so a wine afternoon needs a driver.

One caveat, and it’s the important one: these are boats. They cancel for weather and for lightning, more often than you’d like between June and October. Don’t make a sunset cruise the centrepiece of a one-night anniversary — make it the first night’s plan, so there’s a second chance.

An evening you can walk

Roughly two hours, no car, entirely flat. Works in any month.

Add-ons. Cape May Carriage Company runs horse-drawn rides through the district — a cliché that works. Ghost walks with Craig McManus make a good third-date-energy evening. Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater Company both run seasons worth checking; East Lynne is spelled with an e, which half the internet gets wrong.

Two weekends worth planning around

Victorian Weekend, October 9–12, 2026

Four days of the town doing what it does best, in its best month — October averages a high around 66°F and the crowds have gone. There’s a Victorian Weekend Historic House Tour, and the same Saturday brings the West Cape May Lima Bean Festival and a Vintage Base Ball Game played to 1864 rules at the lighthouse at 11am. Book early; this is one of the few off-season weekends that genuinely fills.

Christmas Candlelight House Tours

The 52nd year. Saturdays December 6, 13 and 20, 2026, 5:30–8:30pm. A self-guided walk through private homes, inns, B&Bs, churches and hotels inside a three-quarter-square-mile stretch of the Historic District — you, on foot, inside other people’s decorated Victorian houses, at night, in December.

Anniversaries and honeymoons

Tell someone. Innkeepers are used to it, and most will do something — a table, a bottle, a room at the front of the house — if they know two weeks out rather than at check-in.

Book the restaurant before the room. The dining rooms are the constraint here, not the beds. If dinner at the Washington Inn on a July Saturday matters, that’s the first call.

Pick a month with a reason. Victorian Weekend in October, the Candlelight tours in December, or the second week of September for warm water and no crowd. An arbitrary August weekend is the expensive way to do this.
