Where to Stay in Cape May: How to Pick Your Area and Your Kind of Place
Two decisions, in order. What kind of place — grand hotel, beachfront motel-resort, Victorian B&B, guest house, rental, campsite. Then which part of town, because here, four blocks changes your week. Get both right and the rest is detail. Get them wrong and you'll spend the trip in the car.
Jump to the decision tableStart here: five questions that decide it
Walk to the sand, or walk to dinner?
You mostly can’t have both. Beach Avenue puts the ocean across the street and dinner four to eight blocks inland. The Historic District flips it exactly.
Who's in the room?
A number of Cape May inns set age minimums or take adults only. It’s the most common booking surprise in town, and the only reliable way to settle it is a phone call.
How many nights, and which nights?
Minimum stays are standard in season. If you want a single Saturday in August, you’re shopping motels and hotels, not inns.
Where does the car go?
Meters run 10am to 10pm, and most of the Historic District was built before anyone owned a car. More below.
Is this July, or is it not July?
Cape May in the second week of September is quieter and cheaper, with the same ocean temperature. That one fact reshapes more trips than anything else on this page.

The six kinds of place you can book
The grand historic hotel
Big, old, near the water, with a lobby, a bar and a front desk staffed at 11pm. Congress Hall (200 Congress Place), The Chalfonte Hotel (301 Howard Street), The Virginia Hotel (25 Jackson Street).
Suits: first-timers, and anyone who wants hotel service inside Victorian bones.
Doesn’t suit: budget travelers in July. Top of the market, priced like it.
The beachfront motel-resort
Beach Avenue, mid-century bones, balconies pointed at the water, and — the real prize — parking on the property. The view is the product.
Suits: families with small children, and anyone who wants to park on Friday and not touch the car until Monday.
Doesn’t suit: people who came for the architecture. You’ll admire it from across the street.
The Victorian bed & breakfast
An owner-run house, a handful of rooms, breakfast cooked and served at a set hour, and a set of house rules. They cluster on Columbia Avenue, Ocean Street, Stockton Avenue and Hughes Street.
Suits: couples and repeat visitors who want to sleep inside the architecture instead of photographing it.
Doesn’t suit: late risers, families with toddlers, anyone who wants a television.
The category most visitors haven’t heard of, and the one that most often solves a budget problem. Smaller than a B&B, less service, sometimes no breakfast, same Victorian housing stock. 931 Beach Guest House and Stockton Manor are two. Suits: solo and shoulder-season travelers out of the room from 8am to 11pm.
The guest house
Doesn’t suit: anyone who needs a private bath and hasn’t confirmed it in writing.
Victorian doubles in the Historic District, condos on Beach Avenue, cottages in West Cape May, on Saturday-to-Saturday summer turns. Settle one thing before you sign: Cape May City beach tags are not valid for rental-property use under City Code §158-2. Don’t assume tags come with the house. They’re required for everyone 12 and older, at $10 a day.
The rental house, condo or cottage
Beachcomber Camping Resort, 462 Seashore Road, is the campground people mean. It’s inland, in Route 9 country rather than beach country. Good for large groups and RV travelers; no good if you want to walk home from dinner.
Camping
Where to stay: the areas, one by one
Cape May City is two and a half miles of guarded beach and a grid you can cross on foot in twenty minutes. The differences between areas are a few blocks wide, and they’re real.

The ocean across the street, the Promenade under your feet, on-site parking at most properties. What you give up: the walk to dinner, and this is where summer traffic sits. Orientation nobody publishes: Beach Avenue’s numbers start low at the Cove end and climb toward Poverty Beach. 11 and 205 put you near the Cove and Convention Hall; 1035, 1101 and 1317 put you at the quiet end near Trenton, Baltimore and Pittsburgh Avenues. Parking detail that costs money: Beach Avenue east of Philadelphia Avenue is metered 10am–5pm, and the north end is ParkMobile only — no meter to feed.
Beach Avenue, the oceanfront strip
The Historic District interior
Columbia Avenue, Hughes Street, Ocean Street, Stockton Avenue, Jackson Street, Congress Place, Howard Street, Gurney Street — the National Historic Landmark district, designated 1976, and where the bed & breakfasts are.
Dinner, the Washington Street Mall, the theaters and the trolley stop at Washington and Ocean Streets are minutes on foot. The beach is two to five blocks — nothing unencumbered, a slog with chairs, an umbrella, a cooler and a four-year-old.
The catch is parking. The 500 blocks of Columbia and Hughes are $2.00-an-hour premium meters, as are Jackson, Ocean, Perry, Decatur and Congress, all running 10am to 10pm.
A separate borough one street inland — Broadway, Myrtle Avenue, Stevens Street, Sunset Boulevard. The value play, and parking in the borough is free. After four days of feeding $1.50-to-$2.00 meters from 10am to 10pm, that’s not a small number. It’s also where the West Cape May Farm Market runs Tuesdays June 23–August 25, 3–7:30pm at Backyard Park, 732 Broadway.
West Cape May
North Cape May and Lower Township
The bay side: North Cape May, Villas, Cape May Beach. Lowest rates on the peninsula, and no beach tags are required anywhere in Lower Township, year-round. The catch sits in the same sentence — those beaches are unguarded, and you’ll drive for everything.
Cape May Point
The Cape May Lighthouse, Cape May Point State Park, the South Cape May Meadows, world-class birding, very little after dark, mostly rentals. The Point runs its own beach tag program and city tags are not accepted — seasonal $50 ($40 before June 1), weekly $25, daily $10, opening June 13, 2026.
The Wildwoods and Diamond Beach
A boardwalk with rides, free beaches, a wall of mid-century motels. Be honest about the driving — you’ll make the round trip every day you want Cape May, and the free shuttle doesn’t come get you.
The decision table
Find the row that sounds like your trip. The fourth column is the part that matters.

| If this is your priority | Book in | Kind of place | The tradeoff you’re accepting |
|---|---|---|---|
| — | — | — | — |
| Walking straight onto the sand | Beach Avenue | Beachfront hotel or motel-resort | Dinner is a walk, a shuttle ride or a drive. Highest rates in town. |
| Walking to dinner and the trolley | Historic District interior | B&B, guest house or in-town hotel | You carry chairs two to five blocks each way. |
| Lowest cost, free parking | West Cape May | Motel, cottage or inn | Nothing is beachfront. Bike or drive. |
| Young kids, a pool, not moving the car | Beach Avenue | Motel-resort | Less character, and the traffic side of town. |
| Quiet, architecture, breakfast cooked for you | Columbia Avenue, Ocean Street, Stockton Avenue | Victorian B&B | House rules, set breakfast hour, minimum stays, limited parking. |
| Free beaches, cheapest rates | North Cape May, Villas, Cape May Beach | Motel or rental | Unguarded beaches, and you drive for everything. |
| Birding, the lighthouse, an early night | Cape May Point | Rental or small inn | Separate beach tags, a June 13 start, nowhere to eat after dark. |
| A boardwalk and a free beach | The Wildwoods, Diamond Beach | Motel or rental | A round trip every time you want Cape May. |
| A week in a house with a kitchen | Historic District, West Cape May, beach blocks | Rental | Saturday turns, and no beach tags — see §158-2. |
| Group or RV travel on a budget | Seashore Road, inland | Campground | Driving in and out every day. |
Parking: the question nobody asks until it's too late
What it costs and when
Standard meters are $1.50 an hour — 25 cents per 10 minutes — running 10am to 10pm, with a five-minute grace period.
Premium streets are $2.00 an hour — unhelpfully, the streets you want to stay on: Carpenters Lane, Congress Place, Congress Street, Decatur, Jackson, Lyle Lane, Mansion, Ocean, Perry, South Lafayette, the 600 block of Washington, and the 500 blocks of Hughes and Columbia.
Shorter windows: Beach Avenue east of Philadelphia Avenue, 10am–5pm; First and Second Avenues, Broadway, Grant, Mt. Vernon and Patterson, 10am–6pm.
Meters activate April 1, most zones run through October 31, some to December 31, and from January 1 to March 31 they’re off entirely — a genuine reason to visit in February. Several zones are ParkMobile only, no physical meter: Carpenter’s Lane, Mansion Street, Lyle Lane, the Jackson Street lot, the Welcome Center lot and north Beach Avenue.
What to expect by lodging type
Beachfront motels and resorts are easiest — on-site lots are the norm and a large part of what you’re paying for. Grand historic hotels vary. Victorian B&Bs are the problem: these houses went up on lots laid out for horses, and two or three spaces for six to ten rooms is a real configuration. West Cape May removes the issue.
Ask this when you book: ‘Is a parking space included with my room, and if not, where do your guests park overnight?’ Get the answer onto your confirmation email.
Charging an EV
Guest charging where you sleep exists at Congress Hall (Tesla) and La Mer, both guest-only — if that’s a requirement, your shortlist just got very short. Otherwise there’s public ChargePoint at the Cape May Welcome Center, 609 Lafayette Street, and twelve Tesla Superchargers at the ACME in Cape May Court House, 24/7 in a free lot. Full detail on our hotels page.
Minimum stays are normal in season, set per property, not by the town. The pattern we see is two nights midweek and three across summer weekends, longer over holidays — a shape, not a rule. The beach season runs May 23 to Labor Day, September 7, 2026, and that’s where minimums bite hardest. It isn’t the only window. Weekends that behave like August even in the fall: Book those four the way you’d book July.
Minimum-night stays and how booking actually works here
Cancellation policies at inns are stricter. A chain hotel often lets you cancel 48 hours out. A six-room Victorian, where your booking is a sixth of a night’s revenue, generally will not — deposits are frequently non-refundable, and some houses refund only if they re-let the room.

When to book, and what the off-season really saves you
For a July or August weekend, or for Victorian Weekend, book in winter. That isn’t panic-selling — it’s how a town with a fixed, historically-protected room supply works. Nobody is building a 200-room hotel in the Historic District. For late September, October or January through March, you can often book weeks out and pay noticeably less.
Here’s the fact that should reorganize your planning. After Labor Day — Monday, September 7, 2026 — beach tags stop being required and lifeguards go off duty, but the ocean stays around 72°F through September. Warm water, empty sand, shoulder rates. You also get unguarded swimming, and that’s a real risk to weigh, not a footnote.
The first week of September is, on the weather data, the single best week of the year here. Late May to mid-June is the other sweet spot.
Deep off-season has its own case: meters are off entirely from January 1 to March 31, dogs are permitted on the city beaches November through March, and Christmas in Cape May runs November 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027. For the full month-by-month picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Cape May.
Adults-only, age minimums and traveling with kids
Cape May supports both, but not in the same building — and the town does a poor job of saying which is which.
Where families generally do better
Where you need to ask about age minimums first
Ask two questions, not one: ‘Do you have a minimum age?’ and ‘Are there rooms where children aren’t permitted even if the property allows them?’ Those get different answers surprisingly often.
If your trip is built around children, our Cape May with kids guide covers the rest.
The free shuttle changes the math, but only from 4pm
Cape May runs a free shuttle — air-conditioned 13-passenger CNG buses with wheelchair lifts. Service animals and ESAs welcome. No fare, no ticket.
2026 schedule: May 22–June 14 (Fri–Sun) · June 19–September 7 (daily) · September 11–October 25 (Fri–Sun) · November 26–December 26 (Fri–Sun).
Hours: 4:00pm to 10:00pm only.
Read that last line twice, because it’s the part that affects where you book. The shuttle covers dinner, not the beach. Staying on Beach Avenue, you can leave the car and ride into town for dinner and a show. Hoping for a lift to the sand at 10am? That service doesn’t exist.
The shuttle makes a beachfront stay more livable. It doesn’t make an inland stay more beachy.
Five booking mistakes we see every summer
Assuming the rental comes with beach tags.
City Code §158-2 says tags aren’t valid for rental-property use. At $10 a day for everyone 12 and up, that adds up.
Booking a Victorian without asking about parking.
Three spaces, eight rooms, a $2.00 meter running to 10pm.
Buying city beach tags for a Cape May Point stay.
Separate programs. City tags aren’t accepted there, and the season starts June 13, 2026.
Treating October like the off-season.
Victorian Weekend (October 9–12) and the Autumn Exit Zero Jazz Festival (October 23–25) fill the town. So does Oktoberfest.
Booking the Wildwoods to save money on Cape May.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Cape May for the first time?
Stay in the Historic District interior — the blocks around Columbia Avenue, Ocean Street and Hughes Street — if you want to walk to dinner, shops and tours, or on Beach Avenue if the beach is the whole point. First-timers usually get more out of the Historic District, because the architecture is the reason Cape May is a National Historic Landmark and you can still reach the sand in five minutes on foot.
What is the best area to stay in Cape May?
There isn’t one best area, there’s a best area per priority. Beach Avenue for oceanfront and on-site parking. The Historic District for walkability to restaurants and the Washington Street Mall. West Cape May for lower prices and free parking. North Cape May for the cheapest rates and free, unguarded bay beaches. Cape May Point for quiet, birding and the lighthouse.
Is it better to stay in a hotel or a B&B in Cape May?
Pick a hotel if you want a front desk at 11pm, flexible breakfast, easier parking and looser cancellation terms. Pick a B&B if you want a Victorian house, a cooked breakfast at a set hour and a host who knows the town. B&Bs typically enforce longer minimum stays, stricter cancellation policies and limited on-site parking, and some set age minimums.
Do Cape May hotels have minimum-night stays?
Many do in season, and B&Bs almost always do. The common pattern is two nights midweek and three across summer weekends, with longer requirements over holiday weekends — but it’s set property by property, so confirm before you plan around a single Saturday night. Fall festival weekends carry summer-length minimums too.
Where can I park if I stay at a Cape May B&B?
Ask before booking, because many Victorian houses have only two or three spaces for six to ten rooms. On-street meters run 10am to 10pm at $1.50 an hour, or $2.00 on premium blocks including the 500 blocks of Columbia and Hughes Streets. The free Cape May Elementary School lot at Lafayette and Madison is free until 11pm but permits no overnight parking.
Is it cheaper to stay in West Cape May?
Generally yes, and parking in the borough is free, which quietly saves more than people expect over a week. You give up beachfront access — you’ll walk about ten minutes further or ride a bike — and there are fewer properties to choose from. It’s the best-value base for a couple who plan to be out all day.
Should I stay in Cape May or Wildwood?
Stay in Cape May for Victorian architecture, restaurants, wineries and a quieter beach. Stay in the Wildwoods for a boardwalk with rides, free beaches and generally lower motel rates. If you book the Wildwoods and expect to spend most days in Cape May, price the round trips first — and note the free Cape May shuttle doesn’t serve the Wildwoods.
When should I book accommodation in Cape May?
Book July and August weekends, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Victorian Weekend (October 9–12) in winter. The room supply in a protected historic district doesn’t grow. For late September through March you can usually book weeks out, and after Labor Day you’ll get roughly 72°F water with shoulder-season pricing.
Now that you know the area and the type, go pick the property.
