It's not a shopping center. It's three blocks of Washington Street with the cars taken out, brick underfoot, benches and planters down the middle, and something like forty independent shops on either side. You can walk the whole thing in a few minutes. You will not, because you'll stop.

Locals say ‘the mall’ and mean at least six different things. Here’s the map in your head, sorted.
The Washington Street Mall itself
The three pedestrian blocks, 300 to 500 Washington Street. This is the spine. Everything else hangs off it.
City Centre Mall — the 400 block
A cluster of shops within the 400 block, mid-mall. If someone tells you a store is ‘in City Centre,’ they mean the middle third of the walk.
The Mini Mall — the 300 block
The 300 block end. Smaller footprint, smaller shops.
Just off the walking mall near Carpenters Lane. Easy to miss if you only ever look straight ahead — turn off the main drag and there’s more shopping behind the storefronts.
Carpenters Square Mall
A courtyard-style group of shops that saw the most turnover in 2026 — four of its tenants are new this year. Worth walking through even if you did the main mall last visit.
Washington Commons
A short connecting lane with its own storefronts, including two of the 2026 arrivals.
Liberty Way
Not on the mall. West End Garage is a separate shopping destination — a multi-vendor space that people routinely confuse with the mall because it comes up in the same searches. Budget it as a separate stop, not a detour.

Grouped by intent rather than by block, because nobody shops alphabetically. Everything below is on the mall or in the adjoining courtyards and lanes. Parking for the mall
At the corner of Washington and Ocean Streets there’s an Information Booth that does more than its name suggests. Three reasons to make it your first stop: It sells Cape May MAC tickets. Trolley tours, house tours, combination tickets — you can buy them here rather than online. The other outlets are the Carriage House Visitors Center at 1048 Washington Street and the Cape May Welcome Center at 609 Lafayette Street. The trolleys leave from across the street. The Ocean Street Trolley Stop, directly opposite the booth, is the departure point for MAC’s trolley tours. Arrive 15 minutes early — they leave on time and they don’t wait. Accessible trolleys need two weeks’ notice: call 609-884-5404. The Architectural Walking Tour departs from the booth itself, covering Hughes Street, Ocean Street and Columbia Avenue. The Information Booth at Washington and Ocean
You can shop for three hours without leaving the mall for lunch. Buoy Coffee opened a second location here for 2026, Coffee Tyme handles the morning cup, and The Fudge Kitchen handles the four o’clock problem. The reopened Cape May Grilled Cheese Co. is the one that reliably works with kids. Several of Cape May’s restaurants sit on or immediately off Washington Street, so the mall is also a perfectly good place to end up at dinner time. Eating on the mall
Here’s the tradeoff, stated plainly: from January through March the parking is free and roughly half the shops are shut. Some close for the winter entirely, some drop to weekends, some just open late. You’ll have the brick to yourself and you may not get into the store you drove for. December is the exception, and it’s the best shopping week of the year. The Christmas in Cape May season runs November 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027, the mall is decorated, and the town is busy without being July-busy. The Christmas Candlelight House Tours — the 52nd — run Saturdays December 6, 13 and 20, 5:30 to 8:30pm, and they’re a self-guided walk through homes, inns and churches inside a three-quarter-square-mile stretch of the Historic District. Shop in the afternoon, tour in the evening. Spring and autumn are the honest sweet spot. Late May to mid June and September to mid October: everything’s open, the sidewalk isn’t shoulder to shoulder, and the shopkeepers have time to talk to you. The first week of September is the best week of the year in Cape May generally, and that applies here too.

Where do you park for the Washington Street Mall?
The streets ringing the mall are premium meters at $2.00 an hour — Carpenters Lane, Decatur, Jackson, Ocean, Perry, Congress, Mansion and the 600 block of Washington. Standard meters elsewhere are $1.50 an hour, enforced 10am to 10pm. Several nearby zones are ParkMobile app-only with no meter. The free alternative is the Cape May Elementary School lot at Lafayette and Madison, free until 11pm.
Is parking free in Cape May in the winter?
Yes. Meters are switched off entirely from January 1 through March 31. They activate again on April 1 and most zones run through October 31, with some expanded zones enforced to December 31. The tradeoff is that a good number of mall shops are closed or on reduced hours in those same three months.
What closed on the Washington Street Mall in 2026?
Casales, which had operated since 1957, and the Toy Shop of Cape May are the two people notice. Also closed: Sea Bags, Art Block Cafe, Serafina Chic, Out There Coffee, Seaweeds, Ladies Room Consignment Boutique and Antiques Emporia. Cape May Snaps still trades but as a mobile business with no storefront. Most of those spaces have already been filled by new shops.
Where does the Cape May trolley leave from?
From the Ocean Street Trolley Stop, directly across from the Information Booth at Washington and Ocean Streets on the mall. Arrive 15 minutes early.
